COFFEE STORY

In the mountains of Nueva Segovia, northern Nicaragua, the Paguaga family has been cultivating coffee for generations, building a legacy rooted in quality, environmental responsibility and a deep connection to the land.

Their five estates — Los Congos, Las Brumas, La Iguana, La Española and La Portuguesa — cover approximately 140 hectares, where coffee cultivation goes hand in hand with careful soil management, the preservation of native vegetation and the protection of local ecosystems.

At the heart of the family's operations stands Santa Lucila, a historic dry mill established in 1961 near Ocotal. Here, traditional knowledge meets careful processing, quality control and the preparation of coffees for international markets.

Santa Lucila Caramelito is created through a thoughtful selection of coffees from the family's estates, bringing together varieties such as Caturra, Villa Sarchi and Catuaí to achieve a distinctive profile of sweetness and balance. The washed process highlights the coffee's clean character, revealing notes of nuts, milk chocolate and caramel, complemented by gentle citrus nuances and a lingering brown sugar sweetness.

Through their collaboration with This Side Up, the Paguaga family continues to develop a model based on transparency, traceability and long-term relationships, ensuring that quality and respect for the people behind each harvest remain central to their work.

For us at Cortinovis Coffee Roasters, Santa Lucila Caramelito reflects what we value most: carefully grown coffee, meaningful relationships at origin and the opportunity to express its natural character through thoughtful roasting.
